Hello,
We are writing to let you know about a parade we are organizing that will take place on a portion of King St. in Kitchener-Waterloo on April 24, 2010 at 12pm. The annual parade has the go ahead and support of both cities and is a FREE event open to all. Sign up yourself, family and/or club today, musical groups welcome! It will begin at Uptown Waterloo Square in Waterloo and end at Victoria Park in Kitchener.
Procession of the Species is a community arts-based Earth Day celebration where people flood the street to flaunt their favourite species or natural element whether it is flora, fauna or fungi, the sky is just the beginning!
Procession is not just about the parade it is about bringing the community together the weeks before hand with over 35 FREE workshops to help prepare us as well as educate us. Workshops in areas of dance, drama, costume design, music and environmental lectures. Check out the website to register www.kwprocession.ca you do not have to be in the parade to go to the workshops nor do you have to go to the workshops to be in the parade.
Modeled after the Olympia Washington Procession of the Species, we have had great support so far from the community, which is not too surprising since KW is a community that loves celebrating through parade. Olympia’s Procession was recently mentioned in National Geographic as a Geotourism Destination for 2010 as it now has over 3 000 participants and more than 30 000 spectators. It was also chosen as best parade in America out of 50 000 parades according to Reader’s Digest.
We believe that this international celebration will be the first full Procession of the Species parade in Canada. The parade is part of the Procession of the Species celebration, an international event that has been going on in Olympia Washington and other communities for 15 years in celebration of Earth Day and the renewal of the Endangered Species Act. Creator Eli Sterling will be down from March 25th -30th from Washington to speak on Sunday March 28th at 2:30pm in Council Chambers at the Kitchener City Hall.
We are project coordinators acting in partnership with the Button Factory (Waterloo Community Arts Centre) and many others including (but not limited to) The Conscious Traveller, Downhips Dance Studio, the Working Centre, the Living Earth Festival, Seven Shores Café, City of Kitchener, City of Waterloo.
Hope to see you out and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
